Problem Background

When Cassandra Lin discovered how large of a problem climate change was, she decided to begin learning about this issue. While doing so, she discovered that if global warming continued to progress at the rate that it was, her coastal town would soon be submerged underwater. Cassandra was understandably shocked, and at ten years old, she vowed to make a difference in climate change. When diving even deeper into this issue with a group of friends, she found out that fossil fuel usage was contributing to climate change. The fact that families in and near her community needed emergency heating assistance sparked an idea.

Solution Background

This idea was Project TGIF, or Turn Grease Into Fuel. Grease donation receptacles were set up, flyers were handed out, presentations were made, and eventually Cassandra and her team even managed to introduce a Rhode Island bill, which made it required by law that all businesses recycle their grease. This grease was later turned into biodiesel, which is a better alternative to petroleum-based diesel because more of its carbon dioxide is absorbed by crops than petroleum-based diesel's. Though Cassandra had decided to focus mainly on the heating aspect of her solution, this became a "win-win" situation - Rhode Island families were able to heat their homes using "Bioheat," the biodiesel, plus less fossil fuels were being used.

Connections

This demonstrates many steps that we use in Tech for Good: finding a problem, researching, brainstorming solutions, etc. But most importantly, this project goes to show that it doesn't matter your age - you can make a positive difference in your community and beyond!
